As a student and family member of Waterford Union High School, which is also a member of the WIAA and Southern Lakes Conference, the expectations of ALL fans is the following.

Good sportsmanship is viewed by the WIAA in conjunction with the Southern Lakes Conference and the NFHS; as a commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity. In perception and practice, sportsmanship is defined as those qualities which are characterized by generosity and genuine concern for others. The ideals of sportsmanship apply equally to all activity disciplines. Individuals, regardless of their roles in activities, are expected to be aware of their influence on the behavior of others and model good sportsmanship. Below are the fundamentals of sportsmanship:

1. Show respect for self and others at all times (examples are not all inclusive)

  • Refrain from use of profanity, especially directed at players, fans, or school officials

  • Show concern for injured players

  • No targeting, heckling, or taunting – to include physical contact – of players or opposing fans

  • Encourage those around you to display only positive, respectful sportsmanlike conduct.

  • Jeers or unsporting behaviors embarrass individuals or schools, or may initiate counter response, which then may escalate to more disrespectful and offensive responses in return.

2. Show respect for the officials.

  • Good sportsmanship implies the willingness to accept and abide by the decisions of the officials.

3. Know, understand and appreciate the rules of the contest.

  • Good sportsmanship suggests the importance of conforming to the spirit as well as the letter of the rules.

  • High School sports are education-based and present an extraordinary opportunity for all of us in education to help students learn both as participants and as spectators, and to prepare for what lies beyond high school.

4. Maintain self-control at all times.

  • Support the activity by learning positive, respectful cheers and displaying unity as fans in following the lead of cheerleaders.

5. Recognize and appreciate skill in performance regardless of team affiliation.

  • Encourage those around you to display only positive, respectful sportsmanlike conduct

  • Cheer for ALL good plays

Sportsmanship Reveals Character Regardless of the Final Outcome.

We wish to collaborate with students and families to support our students always in a positive manner regarding good sportsmanship. Our district goals include a pillar of student climate and culture in which proactive planning, behavior implementation, social emotional learning, and protocols for safety are our focus.

Thank you and let’s have a great year!!
